Health System Strengthening III: Enhancing Quality and Vocational Training in Yemen’s Health Sector 2023 – 2025

The project is implemented with financial support from GIZ, channelled through Akkon University of Human Sciences in Berlin.

Project Objectives

  • Improve the quality of health services in Yemen through the development and implementation of quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Strengthen vocational education and training for health professionals to build a more competent and responsive health workforce.
  • Increase access to health services by providing both remote (telemedicine) and on-site medical and surgical interventions.
  • Strengthen collaboration between German and Yemeni stakeholders to ensure sustainable development of the health system.

Key Activities

  • Capacity Building and Training: Conduct targeted training programs for health professionals and educators, 
  • Curriculum Development and Integration: Update and enhance vocational training curricula in line with quality standards and national health priorities.
  • Provision of Health Services: Deliver essential medical and surgical services through field campaigns and telemedicine platforms.
  • Support to Health Facilities: Assist hospitals in developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality improvement frameworks.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Service Delivery
  • Thousands of people received essential medical and surgical services through outreach campaigns and telemedicine.
  • Health facilities were supported in implementing quality assurance mechanisms and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), leading to more efficient and safer services.
  1. Health Workforce
  • Health professionals received structured training and capacity building, including technical skills and quality standards, enhancing their service delivery.
  • Training-of-trainers (ToT) approaches built long-term institutional capacity in health education and professional development.
  1. Leadership/Governance
  • Strengthened collaboration between German and Yemeni institutions promoted shared ownership and sustainability.
  • Stronger policy and regulatory frameworks that support quality health services and education.
